Spring Cleaning Checklist with Tips

Your home has been shut tight all winter while muddy feet tracked in dirt and the cold dreary weather encouraged little movement and cleaning.  But as the flowers will be blooming and the weather is warming its the perfect time to check off the following items on our Spring Cleaning checklist.  So open those windows, let some fresh air in, and read on for tips to help speed through your Spring Cleaning.

To Do List

Kitchen

Clean the Refrigerator: 2 tablespoons of baking soda for every quart of warm water to wash the interior.  Then vacuum or brush dust from the condenser coils to keep the system from overheating.
Sanitize the Sink: Clean with Soap and Water, then spray a mist of Vinegar followed by a mist of Hydrogen Peroxide.
Disinfect the Disposal: Drop in a cut-up lemon, some salt, and a few ice cubes to deodorize and clean away residue.
Zap the Sponge: Disinfect by squeezing out and microwaving on high for one minute - Try this every night to kill bacteria.
Wipe down countertops and for coffee or juice stains use hydrogen peroxide in water with a few drops of ammonia.
Clean Stove Vent with vegetable oil to remove sticky, stuck dust. Then wipe down with a clean rag.
Discard Stale spices or dated items.
Clean and Sanitize Dishwasher and Microwave

Living

Organize and Dust TV area - reorganize tangled cords, sanitize TV Remotes.
Clean Windows: try using a rubber-edged squeege, which is quicker and more effective than cloth or newspaper. For a stronger window cleaning solution mix 1/2 cup ammonia, 1/2 cup alcohol, and a couple teaspoons of Down in a gallon of warm water.
Reorganize Bookshelves as you dust with books lined vertically and horizontally in a rythmic pattern to relieve the monotony of rows.
Get rid of the dirt in Sliding Door Tracks
Switch it Up: Change the direction of ceiling fans - Counterclockwise provides a pleasant breeze during warm months.

Bedroom

Organize Closets: Get rid of Unused clothes and accessories. Try turning all hangers backward then when you wear turn back towards you to help determine which clothes you dont wear.
Keep Just the Essentials: While dusting remove extra items not used, clutter is no place for a welcoming bedroom.
Rotate and Flip Mattresses
Wash the Comforters and Pillows

Bathroom

Caring for Tile: Pour 1/2 cup baking soda into 2 gallons water and mix - perfect for cleaning tile and grout.
Replace worn bath mats, Wash Shower Curtains and Liners.
Clean your Toilet - using Kool-Aid.  Natural and non-toxic for the pets stealing a drink - it's full of citric acid that will clean the toilet. Pour in and let sit overnight then flush in the morning.
Go through medicine cabinets and discard any outdated products.

General Home

Replace the filters in the Heater and clean all vents
Wash walls, cabinets, baseboards, and woodwork. Mr. Clean Magic Eraser is great for scuffs or those black finger prints on doors and around light switches.
Wipe down all bulbs and light fitures, try using a lint roller on lamp shades.
Clean your Carpet: Sprinkle Baking Soda on carpet before Vacuuming.  Its recommended to deep clean high traffic areas 3-4 times a year, so pull out the Bisel or call in a professional.

Wash Your Blinds and refresh Curtains
Create a new Mood: Make a fast easy change with bedding, towels, and table linens to create a different mood.
Safety Inspection - perform required safety checks including checking and replacing all batteries in smoke detectors.
